FORT McMURRAY, AB. — Students are starting to return to school across Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo and drivers are being reminded to slow down in school zones.
The Regional Municipality says classes begin for some students today, while most return after the Labour Day long weekend on September 2. School zone speed limits of 30 kilometres an hour are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days. Playground zones remain in force year-round from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Motorists are urged to watch for children walking, biking or using scooters, and to stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing. The municipality says drivers should also avoid parking in fire lanes and follow all no-parking signs to ensure safety and accessibility near schools.
Transit routes for the 2025-26 school year have been updated, and students are encouraged to review schedules and ride safely. The municipality says the new guide is available at rmwb.ca/transit.
