Pierre Poilievre announcing plans to reduce fuel tax
Poilievre pledges to make affordability his top priority in fall session
OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his party will make fighting what he calls a second Liberal carbon tax a top priority when Parliament resumes this fall.
Poilievre was referring to the federal Clean Fuel Regulations, which the outgoing Parliamentary Budget Officer has projected will increase fuel prices by 17 cents a litre by 2030. The Conservatives argue the measure will add $136 a year to household costs and hit lower and middle-income Canadians the hardest.
“As Canadians cannot afford food, fuel and homes, Liberals are quietly sneaking into law yet another carbon tax on everything,” Poilievre said in a statement Wednesday.
The Conservatives say the new regulations would also hurt the economy, with the Maritimes expected to face some of the sharpest impacts due to heavy reliance on heating oil.
Poilievre said his focus is on measures that improve affordability and give Canadians stronger take-home pay.
