Police remind drivers that safety is a shared responsibility
EDMONTON — It was a busy long weekend for Alberta RCMP, who handed out 1,661 traffic tickets and took nearly 100 impaired drivers off the road.
From Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, police say 789 tickets were issued for speeding, 34 for distracted driving and 19 for seatbelt violations. Ninety-nine impaired drivers were stopped, including 70 who failed roadside tests and 19 who received warnings.
Despite the enforcement push, there were 54 injury collisions and four people lost their lives.
“Fatal motor vehicle collisions are often avoidable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Every long weekend we are reminded that lives are lost due to factors such as drugs, alcohol and speeding.”
Mounties are urging drivers to plan ahead, avoid driving if impaired and consider delaying trips in poor road conditions. They also stress the importance of giving extra travel time and calling 911 to report dangerous driving.
Police say traffic safety is a shared responsibility, and they continue to share tips and updates on Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and X @RCMPAlberta.
