Okay treasure hunters, this isn’t a drill.
Canada has a full-blown, honest-to-goodness treasure hunt on its hands called The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt— and the prize?
$1.3 MILLION worth of gold coins.
That’s right. No game show, no gimmicks. Just a weatherproof case hiding somewhere in the Great Canadian Outdoors, packed with a code that can be redeemed for 217 one-ounce gold coins. We’re officially in “National Treasure: Maple Syrup Edition.”

It’s called The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt, and it’s being run by The Northern Miner, which is kind of like the Indiana Jones of Canadian newspapers.
Here’s what you need to know before you grab your flannel and compass:
-
The Main Prize: 217 gold coins (yes, actual gold), vault-certified and ready to claim. Find the weatherproof case with the winning code, and it’s all yours.
-
Bonus Prizes: 12 hidden codes scattered across the country, each worth six coins (around $25,000). Monthly clues drop for each of them.
-
The Clues: A mysterious 52-line poem filled with cryptic riddles, red herrings, and possibly even fake typos (or are they clues?!).
-
It’s Brain Over Brawn: No climbing, no scuba gear, no Indiana Jones-level danger. Just your brain, a good jacket, and maybe a Tim Hortons for fuel.
Where Not to Look
To keep things safe and respectful (and to avoid you digging up your neighbor’s shed), here are the off-limits zones:
-
Private property
-
Mines, caves, or tunnels
-
Anywhere underwater
-
Graveyards or memorials
-
Construction sites, dump sites, rooftops, or anything requiring risky stunts
In short: if it’s sketchy, dangerous, or illegal — it’s not there.
