FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — A 37-year-old Fort McMurray man is facing several charges after a break and enter at the River Pointe Shopping Centre earlier this month.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say they responded to a break-in at the downtown mall on Sept. 6 at about 3:44 a.m. Officers were told a man had been seen inside the building, possibly trying to break into an ATM, before fleeing in a black Ford F-150.
Investigators later obtained video surveillance and a description of the suspect. About 30 minutes after the break-in, police received another report of a man trespassing in a nearby neighbourhood. More video footage led officers to identify a suspect.
The next day, RCMP arrested David Nicholas Rush without incident. He is charged with break and enter, committing an offence while masked, possession of break-in instruments, mischief under $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, failing to comply with probation, and two counts of trespassing at night.
Rush was held for a judicial interim release hearing and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 15.
Police encourage residents to report suspicious activity. They say tips help officers know where to look, who to look for and where to patrol. Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP detachment or contact Crime Stoppers at at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com
