Industry open letter urges Prime Minister Carney to simplify rules and boost competitiveness
CALGARY, AB. —Suncor president and CEO Rich Kruger has joined dozens of energy executives in signing an open letter pressing the federal government to adopt clear and competitive policies that will unlock the full economic potential of Canada’s oil and gas sector.
The letter, dated Sept. 15 and addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, follows two earlier “Build Canada Now” appeals sent before and after last spring’s election. While industry leaders welcomed initiatives such as a new Major Projects Office, an Indigenous Advisory Council and initial work on Pathways Plus, they said more decisive steps are needed to attract investment and restore competitiveness.
The executives outlined five priorities: overhauling the Impact Assessment Act and repealing the West Coast tanker ban, cutting regulatory approval times from years to months, scrapping the federal production cap on emissions, establishing a globally competitive fiscal framework, and creating large-scale Indigenous loan guarantees to expand ownership opportunities.
The letter warned that without urgent action, Canada risks missing a “generational opportunity” to harness its vast energy resources. It said private capital requires clarity and certainty to invest in long-term projects that can generate thousands of high-paying jobs and strengthen economic sovereignty.
Kruger and other signatories said they remain committed to working with Ottawa and the provinces on policies that would allow Canada to become what they call a global energy superpower.
