Athabasca Tribal Council highlights urgent need to protect vulnerable people, calling aggressive behaviour unacceptable.
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — The Athabasca Tribal Council says it remains committed to protecting the safety of Indigenous people through its work with a regional task force on murdered, missing and exploited Indigenous peoples.
The council issued a statement this week calling on leaders, businesses, institutions and community members to ensure safety and dignity are upheld, saying bullying, harassment and intimidation have no place in the region.
“This is more than a local issue. This is an important national issue,” said Karla Buffalo, the council’s chief executive officer. “The protection of Indigenous women and all vulnerable people must remain a top priority. Aggressive or harmful behaviour is never acceptable, and it will not be tolerated.”
The Athabasca Tribal Council represents five First Nations in northeastern Alberta and is a lead partner in the task force, which also includes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The group is working to address systemic issues and promote collective responsibility for safety.
