Attendees enjoying the annual SMS Equipment Wine Auction
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — The 15th annual SMS Equipment Wine Auction has raised $134,000 to support youth mentoring programs in the Wood Buffalo region.
The event, held Sept. 20 at SMS Equipment Place, marked the crystal anniversary of the auction, which has been running since 2010. Funds will go toward Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wood Buffalo, which provides free mentorship programs aimed at building confidence and resilience in young people.
The evening featured performances, live and silent auctions, a wine pull, and a collaborative art project between local muralist Danielle Fairweather and students from the Go Girls Summer Camp. Councillor Allan Grandison proclaimed the day Big Brothers Big Sisters Day before festivities began.
SMS Equipment has served as presenting sponsor since the inaugural auction. Other major sponsors this year included Suncor, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation Economic Development, Manitoulin Transport, AirCon, Leavitt Machinery, Harvard Media, CNC Industries, Cummins, and NorthStar Ford Lincoln.
Big Brothers Big Sisters says the money will help meet growing demand for its programs as it prepares for the 16th edition of the fundraiser next year.
