EDMONTON — The Alberta government is preparing parents for the possibility of a provincewide teachers strike by adding learning tools and resources to its website.
The front page of Alberta.ca now includes links to a repository for parents with information on child care, out-of-school care, local services and a new parent toolkit.
More than 700,000 students could be without classes starting Monday if the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the government fail to reach a new deal acceptable to teachers. There has been no breakthrough in strike talks as the Oct. 6 deadline draws near.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides’ press secretary, Garett Koehler, said a parent payment portal will launch on Oct. 13. The program will provide $150 per week, retroactive to Oct. 6, for each child aged 12 and under who is enrolled in the school system.
ATA president Jason Schilling criticized the government’s focus, writing on social media that while toolkits for families were prepared in advance, “it would have been nice to see that forethought put into developing curriculum resources for the K-6 curriculum.”
