FORT MCMURRAY — With schools in both the Fort McMurray Public and Catholic divisions closed to students due to the ongoing teachers’ strike, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says school zone speed limits are temporarily not in effect.
Municipal bylaw services say they are not enforcing school zones during the ongoing teacher lockout and strike. The 30 km/h limit normally applies from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days.
The municipality says school zone regulations will resume once classes are back in session.
Greg Bennett with the RMWB’s Strategic Communications department says motorists should still drive carefully. “We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and exercise caution in school zones, as some schools still provide after-school daycare and programs,” he said.
The RMWB also reminds drivers that playground zones remain in effect year-round, with a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h.
