Morrison Street in downtown Fort McMurray, along with nearby intersections, will be closed in phases this month as the municipality completes major road rehabilitation work.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says construction will begin October 10 and continue until October 25 as part of the Saunderson Pressure Reducing Station project. The work includes removing existing asphalt, repairing concrete, rebuilding the road base, and installing new pavement to improve road conditions and underground infrastructure.

H. Wilson Industries (2010) Ltd. is leading the project under the municipality’s Project Management Office.
Phase one runs from October 10 to 19, closing Morrison Street between Highway 63 and MacDonald Avenue. Phase two, from October 20 to 25, extends the closure to include the Morrison and MacDonald intersection. Access to Earls Restaurant and Servus Credit Union will be available from MacDonald Avenue, while businesses along MacDonald Avenue can be reached through Franklin Avenue and Richard Street.
Intermittent sidewalk closures will also occur on the east side of Morrison Street between Biggs Avenue and MacDonald Avenue. The on-demand transit stop at 10004 Morrison Street will be out of service during phase two.
The municipality says the project will restore and improve key downtown roads while upgrading water supply infrastructure serving the downtown core and southern Urban Service Area. Detours will be in place, and emergency and business access will remain open throughout construction.
