Alberta RCMP are reminding property owners to take extra steps to prevent seasonal property crime as colder weather approaches.
Police say these offences are often crimes of opportunity and tend to increase during the off-season when fewer people are around. They’re urging Albertans to secure equipment, valuables, and vehicles before winter sets in.
The RCMP recommend storing off-road vehicles in locked garages or sheds, blocking them with barriers such as fencing or wheel clamps, and removing fuel to make theft more difficult. Farm equipment should be kept in secured buildings with keys stored separately and batteries removed. Owners are also encouraged to record serial numbers and mark equipment with identifiable details like postal codes.
At seasonal properties, police advise removing valuables such as tools and electronics, securing doors and windows, and posting signs indicating that items have been removed. Outdoor furniture and hunting equipment should also be locked away, and property owners are encouraged to install motion lights, cameras, or GPS trackers on high-value items.
