Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Catholic School Trustee Candidate, Paula Galenzoski. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: What do you see as the key issues facing students and teachers today?
As we’ve been hearing recently, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate funding, and the need for increasing wrap-around support for students are all issues that are not new, but we really are seeing the impact of them now.
In Fort McMurray, our lack of access to mental health professionals and specialists creates high levels of stress for families, students, and staff, and amplifies learning and developmental delays.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Alberta Education Act and the limitations placed on trustees?
After 3 terms (12 years) as a trustee, I am well versed in the Education Act, Regulations, various ministerial orders that define our role as trustees. We have one employee – the superintendent. Equally as important, I am knowledgeable about the legal responsibilities that come with trusteeship, and the distinct difference between governance and operations.
Harvard: What support will you offer the Superintendent in implementing the board’s strategic direction?
Any organization is only as strong as the relationship between the leadership (superintendent) and the board. Strategic direction and decisions are never made in isolation from senior leadership, and good governance means the superintendent is clear on board expectations and direction. The superintendent needs the trust of the board, no operational interference (unless requested or required in exceptional circumstances), and inclusion in board discussions.
Harvard: Do you have children in the system, and how have their experiences influenced your perspective?
I have two sons who have graduated out of the Catholic district -2023 and 2025. Through their experiences I have been able to truly understand the student and family experience of being in the catholic system. I have gained many valuable relationships through being a parent in the system, and the privilege to hear so many others’ personal experiences.
