Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Catholic School Trustee Candidate, Dale Barefoot. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: What do you see as the key issues facing students and teachers today?
In Alberta, we are facing many challenges in our schools. Currently we are experiencing underfunding, lack of supports for students with special needs and undervaluation of the teaching profession. Because of these issues, we are also experiencing difficulty with hiring and retaining teachers and support staff.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Alberta Education Act and the limitations placed on trustees?
I am familiar with the Education Act and how it pertains to trustees. Specifically, trustees are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the schools. They make decisions that are for the good of the students and are involved mainly at the policy level. The Board of Trustees speak as one, not individually so it is important to recognize that there will be much discussion around decisions that need to be made.
Harvard: What support will you offer the Superintendent in implementing the board’s strategic direction?
Trustees are responsible for planning and setting long- term priorities. If elected, I will listen to the public views and share concerns with the superintendent and the other trustees in order to come up with a plan that addresses the needs of the school district as well as the concerns of the community that we serve. As a retired teacher, and mother of three, I feel that I have a wide scope of knowledge and experience to bring to our working sessions.
Harvard: Do you have children in the system, and how have their experiences influenced your perspective?
My three children attended Fort McMurray Catholic Schools from Kindergarten through graduation. I have one daughter who is currently a teacher and another who is working on her Bachelor of Education. My son is an electrician. Fort McMurray Catholic Schools has given them the skills needed to pursue their chosen careers and reinforced the values from our home to be caring, responsible citizens.
