EDMONTON — Alberta’s economy is showing renewed strength, with job numbers and population growth signalling that the famed “Alberta Advantage” is alive and well.
Statistics Canada reports the province added 42,500 full-time jobs in September, accounting for more than 70 per cent of all jobs created in the country that month. The surge follows a year of nation-leading population growth, as Alberta grew by 4.3 per cent between 2023 and 2024.
“Last month, more than 70 per cent of Canada’s job growth came from right here in Alberta, once again proving that Alberta is the best place to do business,” said Marisa Breeze, press secretary to Treasury Board and Finance Minister Nate Horner. “There is more work to be done, but Alberta has made it clear to businesses, entrepreneurs, and global investors that we are open for business, keeping taxes the lowest in Canada, cutting red tape, and training a workforce ready to help them expand.”
According to the Business Council of Alberta, Albertans generate more economic value per person than anywhere else in the country. The province’s per capita GDP sits around $72,000—roughly $7,000 higher than Saskatchewan and up to $23,000 higher than Ontario and Quebec.
While the rapid growth brings challenges in housing, healthcare, and social services, Finance Minister Horner said Alberta’s fundamentals remain strong. The province has received three credit upgrades over the past six years, reflecting confidence in its fiscal management and economic outlook.
The province cautions that monthly job numbers represent only a snapshot, but officials say the trend is clear: Alberta is growing faster, producing more, and attracting families and businesses looking for opportunity.
With strong job creation, record population gains, and leading GDP performance, Alberta appears firmly back on the national economic map.
