FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Residents of Fort McMurray who registered with the Canadian Red Cross during the 2016 wildfire are now eligible for financial assistance to help reduce the risk of future wildfires.
The Wildfire Residential Mitigation Incentive Program offers reimbursements of up to $2,500 for approved mitigation activities such as yard maintenance, fire-resistant landscaping and other FireSmart improvements. Funding amounts depend on the specific work completed, and applicants must provide before-and-after photos and, in some cases, receipts to qualify.
The program is open to homeowners and renters in areas of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo affected by the 2016 wildfire. Applications will be accepted from September 29, 2025, to January 31, 2026, with all work and documentation due by June 30, 2026.
Because funding is limited, eligible residents are encouraged to apply early.
Applicants may be required to verify their identity through an authentication process, which could include a video call with a program coordinator. Activities completed before September 29, 2025, will not qualify for reimbursement.
The Red Cross is reminding residents to watch for scams and says it will never request personal banking information, credit card numbers or Social Insurance Numbers by text or email.
For more information, residents can contact RMWBMitigation@redcross.ca or call 1-833-966-4225 during business hours.
