FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — One person was injured in a collision that shut down Highway 63 in both directions Friday morning near the Syncrude site north of Fort McMurray.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say the crash between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle happened just after 5 a.m. near the Mildred Lake North Gate, north of the Syncrude Split. Syncrude Emergency Services, Regional Emergency Services, and RCMP all responded.
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff says initial information indicates the passenger vehicle sideswiped a semi-trailer and lost control. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. There is no update on the person’s condition.
Savinkoff added that while the cause remains under investigation, motorists are reminded to drive to road conditions, avoid distractions, and take breaks if they are tired or fatigued.
Traffic was halted for several hours, with alternating flow resuming around 8 a.m. The highway was fully reopened by about 2 p.m. after investigators and cleanup crews cleared the scene.
RCMP say the investigation into the crash continues.
