FORT MCMURRAY — The region’s top artists, educators, and cultural champions were celebrated Saturday night as the Arts Council Wood Buffalo hosted the 10th annual Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards, better known as the Buffys.
The gala, themed Ten Years of Midnight at the Black and White Ball, marked a decade of recognizing creativity, innovation, and the vital role of the arts in community life. Each year, the Buffys honour individuals and organizations whose work enriches the region’s cultural landscape.
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to the Fort McMurray Potters’ Guild, recognized for decades of mentorship and craftsmanship that have shaped generations of artists.
Alan Roberts received the Performing Arts Award for his longstanding contributions to theatre and arts education, while Katie Williams earned the Ken Flaherty Music Award for her influence on the local music scene.
In visual and media categories, Alexandra Kavanagh was recognized for her creative perspective in visual arts, and Matt Salem of Hexwave Media received the Media Arts Award for storytelling that highlights community life. Nicole Wismann of Deco Moon Glassworks won the Craft Award for her striking glasswork.
The Literary Arts Award went to Juleus Ghunta, whose writing continues to inspire imagination and empathy. Shannon Whitbread, an art teacher at Father Patrick Mercredi Community High School, received the Arts Education Award for guiding young artists and fostering creativity in classrooms.
McMurray Métis earned the Arts Administration Award for leadership and cultural engagement, while Stacey Grant received the Indigenous Artist Award for work that celebrates identity and tradition.
The Creative Collaboration Award went to the Northern Light Christmas Album project, which united local musicians and raised funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association of Wood Buffalo.
In the performing categories, the Fort McMurray Avrora Ukrainian Dance Club took home the Dance Award, celebrating culture and community through movement.
The Buffys also honoured emerging talent and advocates for the arts. Arianna Dakin received the Rising Star Award, Ashton Morehouse was named Youth Leader in the Arts, and Jessie Stecyk and Tavern on Main were recognized with the Arts Champion Award for ongoing support of local performers.
The evening also featured a major community announcement: Suncor Energy will serve as the building presenting partner for the forthcoming Arts Incubator Project, a new creative hub being developed in partnership with Arts Council Wood Buffalo.
The Buffys continue to stand as a celebration of artistic excellence and community spirit, highlighting how the arts help make Wood Buffalo a vibrant and inspiring place to call home.
