FORT MCMURRAY–Wood Buffalo RCMP and Regional Emergency Services responded to a serious motor vehicle collision Monday morning, October 27, at approximately 11:07 a.m.
The crash occurred south of Fort McMurray on Highway 63 and involved a semi tractor truck and a Mazda A3i passenger car.
According to RCMP, both vehicles were traveling southbound when the passenger car lost control and entered the path of the semi.
The resulting collision sent the car into the ditch, where it rolled.
The driver and lone occupant of the Mazda was transported by ground ambulance to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in serious condition.
Their current condition is not known. The driver of the semi tractor unit was not physically injured.
RCMP have now cleared the scene, and traffic is no longer restricted in the area. However, road and weather conditions remain a concern due to ongoing rain and snow in the region.
Authorities are reminding motorists to prepare for changing road conditions and to exercise extra caution while driving.
With winter weather arriving, RCMP warn that icy roads, snow-covered highways, and reduced visibility can significantly increase the risk of collisions.
The investigation into the factors leading up to the crash is ongoing.
Drivers are encouraged to keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Slow down and drive to conditions. Posted speed limits are meant for ideal conditions, not snow and ice.
- Increase following distance to allow more time to stop.
- Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, including proper tires, a full windshield washer reservoir, and functioning lights.
- Clear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, and lights before driving.
- Plan ahead, check road reports, give yourself extra travel time, and let others know your route.
