Keyano College launches new IT program to meet growing tech needs in Wood Buffalo
FORT McMURRAY— Keyano College is introducing a new Information Technology Specialist Certificate program next semester, describing it as a fast response to local demand for technology workers and digital support services.
The one year, full time program begins in January at Keyano’s Clearwater Campus. It will blend classroom instruction with workplace training through industry placements so students can transition directly into entry level IT roles.
The curriculum is designed around common certification pathways in the tech sector. Students will receive hands on training in computer hardware, operating systems, network communications and cybersecurity fundamentals, with instruction aligned to widely recognized CompTIA A plus, Network plus and Security plus standards. They will also study professional practices, project management and career readiness.
Dr. Benjamin Sey, associate dean of university studies, says employers across northern Alberta are increasingly reliant on qualified IT staff. “The speed of technological change requires specialized training programs that can adapt and deliver skilled workers quickly,” he said. “Graduates will be assets to any organization in need of tech support.”
The college says the program is intended for both recent high school graduates and adults looking to change careers or upgrade their skills. It is part of a broader strategy to expand local education pathways in technology and support regional economic diversification.
Keyano continues to offer programs in areas such as energy, construction, business, health and the arts. College officials say demand for workers with digital troubleshooting and cybersecurity skills is rising in industries across Wood Buffalo, from oilsands operations to small businesses and non profits.
Applications are open through the Office of the Registrar. Student advisors are available to assist with program requirements and enrolment.
