FORT McMURRAY – A multi-agency collaboration in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has been honoured by the Alberta government for outstanding service to older adults. The FuseSocial-led Seniors Subsector of the Tomorrow Project, comprising nine partner organizations, was recognized with a 2024–25 Minister’s Seniors Service Award for collective impact in supporting seniors.
The Seniors Subsector brings together frontline agencies and nonprofits that provide direct advocacy, programming and service delivery for older residents of Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, Anzac, Janvier, Conklin, Gregoire Lake and the broader Wood Buffalo region. Under the Tomorrow Project, FuseSocial acts as the backbone organization, coordinating and facilitating the collaborative effort.
The group’s steering-committee founding partners include St. Aidan’s Society, Golden Years Society, YMCA of Northern Alberta, Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre and the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo. Expanded contributors include Some Other Solutions, Support Services Wood Buffalo, the Royal Canadian Legion McMurray Branch 165 and McMurray Métis.
The provincial award, established in 1998 to honour individuals and organizations that enhance the independence and well-being of older Albertans, was given this year to 18 recipients across the province. It recognizes work such as improving access to transportation and meals, reducing social isolation and advocating for seniors’ rights.
Local leaders emphasize that the recognition reflects the culture of volunteerism and community-driven service across Wood Buffalo’s senior-service sector.
