Wood Buffalo Police investigate hit-and-run, search for damaged pickup
Wood Buffalo RCMP are asking for the public’s help identifying a pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run in Fort McMurray’s Timberlea neighbourhood early Sunday.
Police say that around 12:11 a.m. on Oct. 26, officers received several reports of a vehicle speeding along Pacific Crescent. The vehicle nearly hit another driver before crashing through a park fence at Pacific Crescent and Breaker Street and continuing across a field. It was last seen heading in the direction of École McTavish High School and the Independent Grocer.
Witnesses provided a possible licence plate, but RCMP say it did not match any registered vehicle. Officers were unable to locate the pickup.
The suspect vehicle is described as a grey or silver, smaller pickup truck — possibly a Toyota — with a sunroof and significant front-end damage. Police say they have obtained surveillance images from a nearby resident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Police are also encouraging residents and businesses with security cameras to register in the province’s CAPTURE program — Community Assisted Policing Through the Use of Recorded Evidence — which helps officers locate video evidence during investigations. The program does not give police access to live camera feeds and registration information is not public.
