Boil water advisory remains in place for Fort Chipewyan
FORT CHIPEWYAN — A boil water advisory remains in effect for Fort Chipewyan, with no word yet on when it will be lifted.
Alberta Health Services issued the advisory after a depressurization in the community’s water distribution system at the municipal water treatment plant. It does not apply to the nearby communities of Allison Bay or Dog Head.
Residents and businesses using treated water in Fort Chipewyan are still being told to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, brushing teeth, washing produce, preparing infant formula or juice, or making ice.
The water remains safe for bathing and laundry. For handwashing, people are advised to use soap and water, then apply hand sanitizer with more than 60 per cent alcohol. Bottled water may be used as an alternative.
Operators at the community’s water treatment plant are working to correct the problem and restore normal service. AHS says the advisory will stay in place until the water supply is fully restored and testing confirms it is safe to drink.
Environmental public health officers are continuing to monitor the situation through sampling and testing.
