FORT MCMURRAY — Residents are invited to gather in Waterways on November 11 to honour Canada’s veterans, active service members and those who lost their lives in service to the country.
This year’s Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165 at 9317 Huggard Street. Organizers note there will be no ceremony at MacDonald Island Park this year.
Public wreath laying will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the formal ceremony beginning at 10:40. The service will include speeches, poetry readings, musical performances, the lowering of the flag and two minutes of silence.
Following the ceremony, the Legion will host a community gathering from noon to 2 p.m. with museum tours, dancer performances, and chili and buns available by donation.
A free Park and Ride service will run from the Keyano Sports and Wellness Centre and Howard Pew Park, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and rotating every 10 to 15 minutes. Service will pause during the ceremony and resume until 12:30 p.m.
Parking at the Legion will be limited to seniors, people with mobility challenges, staff and volunteers. The street in front of the Legion will be closed during the ceremony, with attendees encouraged to use nearby streets and Howard Pew Park.
