FORT MCMURRAY–Alberta Health Services has lifted the Boil Water Advisory for the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan. Officials confirm that tap water is now safe to drink and meets Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.
Residents affected by the advisory are advised to run their taps for five to ten minutes to flush the lines. Appliances with waterline connections—such as refrigerator water and ice dispensers—should be drained, flushed, cleaned, and disinfected.
While the water is safe to drink, a Water Conservation Advisory remains in effect for users of the municipal water treatment plant. The community is being asked to limit water use to help refill potable water reservoirs, which were drawn down during the flushing process.
Alberta Health Services recommends using tap water only for essential needs. Residents are encouraged to:
• Take quick showers instead of baths
• Only run washing machines with full loads
• Minimize dishwasher use and be mindful when hand washing dishes
People are also asked not to fill jugs, bathtubs, or large containers with municipal water, as this can quickly drain the reservoirs and delay the lifting of the conservation advisory.
Updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
