NIAGARA ON THE LAKE, Ont. Canada has issued a new round of sanctions aimed at Russia’s drone program, cyber operations and energy revenues as G7 foreign ministers gather in the Niagara region.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand detailed the measures on Wednesday during public remarks delivered alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The sanctions take immediate effect and target 13 individuals and 11 entities involved in Russia’s drone development, cyber infrastructure and liquefied natural gas sector. They also add another 100 vessels to Canada’s list of shadow fleet ships accused of helping Russia move oil in violation of Western restrictions.
Global Affairs Canada said the measures are aligned with similar actions by the United States, Britain and the European Union and are intended to increase the economic cost of Russia’s nearly four year war on Ukraine. The department said this is the first time Canada has sanctioned information technology infrastructure linked to Russian hybrid operations against Ukraine.
The announcement came as G7 ministers met with Sybiha following fresh Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power grid and continued fighting in the country’s south. Discussions at the two day meeting include long range support for Ukraine, air defence, energy security and critical minerals.
Canada is closing out its 2025 G7 presidency and has also invited ministers from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and South Korea to take part in the talks.
