FORT McMURRAY — Good Shepherd Catholic School is marking a major milestone next week as staff, students and alumni gather to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.
The Beacon Hill elementary school first opened its doors in 1975 and now serves about 350 students from pre-kindergarten to Grade 6. It offers faith-based instruction within the Fort McMurray Catholic Schools division.
The anniversary celebration takes place Nov. 20, beginning with refreshments at 10:30 a.m., followed by an assembly at 11 a.m. and lunch afterward. Former staff members are expected to return for the event, although organizers say the assembly cannot be opened to the general public because of space limitations. A larger community barbecue is planned for the spring.
The school’s early years included an unexpected setback. In 1980, a fire forced Good Shepherd to close temporarily, a moment long remembered by former staff and families who were part of the school at the time.
Organizers say next week’s celebration will highlight memories, artifacts and stories from across five decades of Catholic education in Beacon Hill, reflecting on the school’s growth and its lasting place in the community.
