FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP used one of their new drones to help arrest a man wanted on a Canada-wide parole warrant after he ran into a wooded area in the city’s downtown.
The detachment recently expanded its fleet of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems with support from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Police say the new drones can fly longer, operate in colder weather and provide clearer images. RCMP pilots completed training on Nov. 6 and began using the equipment immediately.
Members of the Wood Buffalo Crime Reduction Unit were on patrol when they approached a man who gave a false name. Officers later confirmed he was wanted for a parole violation related to break and enter and theft convictions. He ran from the police and disappeared into thick brush.
Police deployed an infrared-equipped drone that located the man within minutes. Officers were guided to the location and arrested him without incident. He remains in custody.
RCMP say drones are used only during investigations and emergencies, and that they operate under strict privacy and legal rules. Judicial authorization is required when there is an expectation of privacy.
Alberta RCMP say the drone program is intended to support frontline policing while maintaining public trust.
