Suspect in Townhall loader vandalism
FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are searching for a suspect after a stolen front end loader was driven into a downtown commercial building and burst into flames early Saturday morning, causing extensive structural damage.
Police say the call came in at 3:26 a.m. on Nov. 15 after a Komatsu loader was seen travelling on Prairie Loop Boulevard before striking the Townhall building at 8104 Fraser Avenue. The impact carved into the corner of the structure and scattered debris across the area. The machine was also on fire when emergency crews arrived.
Regional Emergency Services extinguished the blaze, which investigators believe was caused by or tied to the collision. No injuries were reported and no other vehicles in the parking lot were damaged.
RCMP say video surveillance captured the suspect fleeing the scene on foot before officers arrived. Investigators believe the person has knowledge and experience operating heavy equipment.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
