EDMONTON — Alberta will conduct a provincewide test of the National Public Alerting System today, sending a test message to televisions, radios, wireless devices and online platforms at 1:55 p.m.
Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis says the exercise is part of a twice-yearly check to ensure the Alberta Emergency Alert system works properly during real emergencies such as tornadoes, wildfires, floods and Amber Alerts. The test will also reach compatible cellphones across the province, including those connected to Wi-Fi through the Alberta Emergency Alert app.
Ellis says alert interruptions can be inconvenient but are necessary to identify and fix technical issues before they affect public safety. He encouraged Albertans to download the provincial alert app to make sure they receive warnings when it matters.
The minister says the test is also an opportunity for people to talk with their families, friends and coworkers about emergency preparedness, including whether they have a 72-hour kit with food, water, light sources, first aid supplies, important documents and emergency contacts.
