FORT McMURRAY — A Fort McMurray woman under investigation for drug trafficking is facing child endangerment charges after police say she carried out a drug deal while accompanied by her toddler.
ALERT’s organized crime team in Fort McMurray charged the woman on October 31 after investigators witnessed what they describe as a drug transaction taking place with the child present.
Police later searched the suspect’s home and say they found cocaine near the child’s toys and play area. Officers seized twenty five grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of twenty five hundred dollars.
Staff Sergeant Mark Wait of ALERT says investigators fast-tracked the file after learning a child had been exposed to drug activity, calling the situation incomprehensible and unsafe.
Charges include drug trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, causing a child to be in need of intervention and offences under Alberta’s Drug Endangered Children Act. The woman’s name is not being released to protect the identity of the child.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on November 25. Alberta Children’s Services has been notified.
The Drug Endangered Children Act allows authorities to intervene when children are exposed to drug houses, drug production or other illegal drug activity. Police say anyone with information about drug or gang activity can contact local law enforcement or reach Crime Stoppers anonymously.
