Council excellence awards
FORT McMURRAY — There are just under two weeks left to nominate someone for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Council Excellence Awards, which remain open until Dec. 3.
The annual awards recognize residents who make significant contributions to the region in four categories: Citizen of the Year, Everyday Hero, Indigenous Advocate and Youth. A selection panel reviews all submissions and recommends finalists to mayor and councillors, who choose the recipients. Winners and their nominators will be invited to a ceremony in the new year.
Last year’s recipients were Mohamed Tarrabin as Citizen of the Year, Nadeem Aslam as Everyday Hero, Stacie Atkinson as Indigenous Advocate and Lalithya Raavi for the Youth award.
Nominees must have lived in Wood Buffalo for at least 12 consecutive months and must consent to being nominated. Youth candidates must be between 15 and 34 years old as of Dec. 31, 2023. Previous winners cannot be nominated for the same award within five years, and nominees cannot hold elected office. Self-nominations or nominations for someone who has died are not accepted.
RMWB employees may be nominated, but not for work tied to their job duties. Members of the award selection panel are not eligible.
The municipality says Pulse can help anyone who struggles with the nomination process by walking them through the form or completing it on their behalf. Pulse can be reached at 780-743-7000 or 1-800-973-9663.
