EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP are urging residents to secure their mail and property as the holiday season brings a surge in deliveries and a rise in mail theft across the province.
Police say online shopping and gift shipping typically lead to more thefts at this time of year. They recommend choosing signatures on deliveries or giving couriers instructions to leave parcels out of sight. Tracking shipments and arranging for deliveries when someone is home can also reduce the risk of theft.
Mounties say residents can have packages shipped to pickup locations at no extra cost, and note that doorbell cameras and motion lights are effective deterrents. People are advised not to send cash or payments through the mail and to report any suspicious activity around mailboxes.
For those traveling in December, RCMP suggest ensuring mail is collected, driveways are cleared and homes appear occupied. They also recommend locking all doors and windows and using timers or motion sensor lighting.
