The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is moving forward with its revised plan for this year’s Santa Claus Parade, shifting the event to a drive-thru format today, Sunday, December 7.
The change comes as extreme cold continues to settle over the region, with safety remaining the top priority for volunteers, contractors, participants, spectators, and municipal staff.
Floats will be set up along Clearwater Drive from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., giving residents the chance to enjoy the festive displays from the warmth and comfort of their vehicles.
Drivers are asked to enter the parade route at Franklin Avenue and Clearwater Drive, near Home Hardware. For anyone without transportation there will be free transit buses to and from Keyano that will loop along the parade route.
There will be no access from Riedel Street and Clearwater Drive, though businesses on Riedel will stay open and accessible during the event.
The municipality says the drive-thru format allows the annual tradition to continue while keeping the community safe in the ongoing extreme cold.
