EDMONTON — Another four Alberta MLAs are facing recall petitions after Elections Alberta approved new applications under the province’s Recall Act.
Chief electoral officer Gordon McClure confirmed the applications met legislative requirements and said notices were issued by Dec. 2 to the petition applicants, the four MLAs, their party leaders and Speaker Ric McIver. The petitions were formally issued Thursday and posted on Elections Alberta’s website.
The affected MLAs are Calgary-Beddington’s Amanda Chapman, Calgary-East’s Peter Singh, Calgary-Peigan’s Tanya Fir and Red Deer-North’s Adriana LaGrange. Each petition requires signatures from 60 per cent of voters who cast ballots in the 2023 general election in the riding. Thresholds range from 8,593 signatures in Calgary-East to 13,051 in Calgary-Peigan.
The 90 day signature period begins Dec. 6 and runs until March 5, 2026. Only eligible electors who have lived in their riding for at least three months may sign, and signatures must be collected by registered canvassers using official petition sheets. Canvassers must follow a code of conduct and witness each signature.
Elections Alberta will verify each petition within 21 days of submission and release results within a week of completing that process, no later than early April if petitions are submitted on the final day.
If a petition meets the required threshold, Elections Alberta must notify the Legislative Assembly, which then determines next steps under the Recall Act.
Petition details, MLA statements and canvassing rules are posted on Elections Alberta’s website.
