MONTREAL — Ritual Films is launching a series of community initiatives tied to the Canadian release of Rebuilding, a new feature by director Max Walker-Silverman, beginning with a theatrical opening in Calgary on Dec. 12.
The distributor will hold free screenings on Dec. 17 in Kelowna and Fort McMurray in partnership with Landmark Cinemas. The events are described as gestures of solidarity for communities deeply affected by wildfires, including the 2023 McDougall Creek fire in Kelowna and the 2016 wildfire in Fort McMurray.
Ritual says it will also distribute complimentary tickets to firefighters during the film’s theatrical run.
Creative director Olivia Courchesne said the film’s themes of resilience and compassion make the western rollout especially meaningful for communities that have lived through large scale disaster and recovery.
Additional screenings will follow in Saskatoon, Victoria and Toronto on Dec. 19. The film will open in Vancouver on Dec. 26, with more cities added starting Jan. 9. Walker-Silverman will attend a Q&A at TIFF Lightbox on Dec. 19 and is available for interviews that day in Toronto, as well as remotely on Dec. 12.
Rebuilding stars Josh O’Connor as a divorced father who loses his ranch in a wildfire and begins piecing his life back together while living in a government-run trailer community. The cast also includes Meghann Fahy, Amy Madigan, Lily LaTorre and Kali Reis.
Critics have praised the film as a gentle and empathetic portrait of recovery. Reviewers from outlets including The New York Times, Roger Ebert and Collider highlighted its focus on quiet resilience and O’Connor’s restrained performance.
Ritual describes itself as a Canadian distributor focused on international festival films, restored classics and contemporary works that challenge audiences and bridge theatrical and on-demand viewing.
