FORT McMURRAY — The Centre of Hope has taken to social media with an urgent call for help as winter settles over the region, asking the community to donate warm clothing for people experiencing homelessness. The organization says it needs winter jackets, boots, warm socks, toques and gloves, and is accepting new or gently used items during regular operating hours.
The Centre says demand for winter essentials increases sharply as the cold sets in, and donated items often move out as quickly as they come in. Staff stress that even a single pair of socks or gloves can make a meaningful difference for someone spending long hours outdoors.
The Centre of Hope operates a daytime shelter in downtown Fort McMurray, supporting people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing housing. Its Daytime Shelter serves as the first point of contact for many, connecting patrons with outreach programs, mental health counselling, Street Connect medical services, AHS supports, housing resources and assistance from community partners.
The organization also offers specialized outreach for people living with or potentially affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, helping participants set goals, access supports and improve stability. For individuals who are chronically homeless, the Housing with Supports program focuses on securing stable housing without preconditions. The Centre’s Permanent Supportive Housing program extends that stability with 24 hour staffing, harm reduction supports and long term recovery pathways.
Other services include primary care, addiction support, sexual health education, pregnancy testing and a Street Reach van that delivers essential supplies to people who do not use traditional shelters. The Centre also hosts a diagnostic clinic providing FASD assessments for people aged seven and older.
The Centre of Hope says community support is vital during the coldest months of the year, when winter gear can play a direct role in keeping vulnerable residents safe.
