FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will activate winter maintenance zones next week as more snow is forecast for Fort McMurray.
Environment Canada expects snow on five of the next seven days and the municipality says its annual Winter Maintenance Zone program will begin Monday. Zones 1 and 2 will be active from Dec. 15 to 19, and residents can sign up for weekly email alerts on the municipal website.
The WMZ program rotates subzones every second week. When a subzone is activated, vehicles must be moved off residential streets from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the assigned day so crews can complete winter maintenance. When a subzone is relaxed, on street parking is allowed without the risk of tickets or towing.
Crews will proceed directly to snow removal this cycle, which takes longer than routine clearing. Residents are urged to confirm their subzone and maintenance day using the Find Your Zone tool. The RMWB warns that posted signs take priority over online mapping.
The municipality says checking zone status weekly is important because activation may change due to weather, equipment issues or parked vehicles. Most subzones are active every second week, meaning vehicles usually need to be moved twice a month.
Towing for WMZ violations is handled by an independent contractor and inquiries must be directed to the company. The RMWB encourages residents to subscribe to WMZ alerts, review the winter maintenance brochure, monitor electronic signs at neighbourhood entrances and follow municipal social media for updates.
