FORT McMURRAY — Council has approved a $149 million interim municipal budget to fund operations and key capital work through the first quarter of 2026 while preparations continue for full budget deliberations in February.
The decision came at a Dec. 9 meeting and ensures municipal programs and services continue without interruption. The full 2026 operating and capital budgets are scheduled for debate Feb. 3 to 5, with Feb. 6 reserved if needed.
Mayor Sandy Bowman said the interim budget secures essential funding while allowing Council time for open public discussions on long term spending. He encouraged residents to take part in next year’s budget meetings.
The interim budget allocates $11.4 million in 2026 and $5.4 million in 2027 for capital initiatives intended to keep infrastructure projects moving. It also provides $11 million for the Community Investment Program Approval Committee, which oversees the Community Sustaining Grant, Community Capital Grant and Community Impact Grant. The package includes one quarter of annual funding for the municipality, RMWB controlled corporations and facility operators.
Chief financial officer Laurie Farquharson said adopting an interim budget is a standard approach for a newly elected council since it allows time to review policies and processes while keeping services stable.
The full proposed 2026 budget and background documents will be posted in the new year on the municipality’s website at rmwb.ca/budget.
