EDMONTON — Alberta is creating a new award for education students who commit to teaching in rural and northern communities, offering financial incentives to help attract and retain teachers in regions facing staffing challenges.
The Northern Alberta Teacher Award will provide $9,000 to graduates who complete two years of full time teaching in a northern school division, or $18,000 to those who complete three years. The province says the return to service model is intended to improve stability in classrooms and expand access to high quality education in smaller and remote communities.
Students will be selected while completing the final year of a Bachelor of Education program at an accredited post secondary institution. The award replaces the Northern Student Teacher Bursary, which previously supported eligible students during their final year of studies and first year of teaching in northern Alberta.
Applications for the new program are open until Jan. 19, 2026. Eligibility information and application details are available on the province’s website.
