FORT MCMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP is reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect their homes while travelling during the holiday season, when empty houses can be more vulnerable to theft or winter related damage.
Police say holiday trips, family visits and winter getaways often leave homes unattended for extended periods, creating opportunities for break ins or preventable problems such as frozen pipes.
RCMP encourage residents to make their homes appear occupied by using programmable lights, smart plugs or automated blinds. Maintaining the exterior of a property is also important, including arranging for mail and packages to be collected and ensuring driveways and walkways are cleared after snowfall.
Before leaving, homeowners are advised to double check all entry points and lock doors and windows, including garages and basement access. Police also suggest considering security upgrades such as doorbell cameras, smart locks or monitored alarm systems, which allow homeowners to receive alerts while away.
Social media habits are another concern. RCMP recommend avoiding posts that announce travel plans or share real time vacation updates, and turning off location tagging on mobile devices.
Winter specific steps can also reduce the risk of damage. These include setting thermostats to a safe temperature, shutting off the main water supply or leaving a tap slightly open to prevent pipes from freezing, and unplugging non essential electronics.
Police say asking a trusted neighbour, friend or family member to check on a home periodically can add another layer of protection. Exterior lighting, especially motion activated or dusk to dawn fixtures, can also deter unwanted attention during the darker winter months.
Residents looking for more seasonal safety tips are encouraged to follow RCMP social media channels for updates throughout the holidays.
