FORT MCMURRAY — Students and staff with the Fort McMurray Public School Division have stepped up to help people experiencing homelessness by donating warm winter gear and food to the Centre of Hope.
The division says students in the PEAK Academy at École McTavish organized a collection of winter clothing and snacks after the Centre of Hope issued an urgent appeal for community support as colder weather set in.
The donated items were delivered to the Centre of Hope Drop-In program, which provides a daytime shelter and essential services for people who are unhoused or at risk of losing housing. Demand for winter clothing typically rises sharply during the coldest months, with items often distributed as quickly as they arrive.
Fort McMurray Public School Division Superintendent Annalee Nutter said the students responded with compassion and care.
“We are incredibly proud to recognize the students of the PEAK Academy at École McTavish for their inspiring act of compassion and care,” Nutter said. “Their generous contribution demonstrates a commitment to our community’s most vulnerable members. This kindness ensures community members who need it are cared for during the cold months.”
She thanked the students for setting an example of empathy and service.
The Centre of Hope thanked the school division and the PEAK Program for the contribution, saying the donation helps ensure patrons have access to essential warmth and nourishment and supports the Drop-In as a safe and welcoming space.
The Centre of Hope operates a downtown daytime shelter and connects clients with outreach services, health care, housing supports and community partners. Staff say community donations play a critical role in keeping people safe during winter, when exposure to cold can pose serious risks.
