FORT McMURRAY — The Fort McMurray Public School Division has promoted longtime educator Cynthia Shelley-Lewis to assistant superintendent of inclusive learning, a move the division says reflects the expanded, system-wide scope of her responsibilities.
Shelley-Lewis has spent more than two decades with the division, most recently serving nearly five years as director of inclusive learning. In that role, she oversaw programs and supports for students with exceptionalities and worked to advance equitable and accessible learning across the system.
She began her career with the division as a high school social studies teacher at Composite High School and Westwood Community High School before moving into school counselling. Shelley-Lewis later spent 11 years in school administration, building experience at both the school and division levels.
The division said the updated title recognizes the leadership and accountability already embedded in the role, elevating inclusive learning within senior administration.
Shelley-Lewis holds a bachelor of education from the University of Alberta and a master of educational leadership from the University of Prince Edward Island. She has also completed the superintendent quality standard certification through the University of Calgary and has been a regulated member of the College of Alberta School Superintendents since 2021.
In a statement, Shelley-Lewis said she was honoured to take on the assistant superintendent role and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting students with exceptionalities.
“After 25 years of serving the Fort McMurray Public School Division in various roles, I remain deeply committed to fostering inclusive opportunities for students, working alongside families and staff to support every student’s learning and well-being,” she said.
Division officials said Shelley-Lewis’s promotion reflects her leadership, experience and continued focus on student-centred practices aimed at removing barriers and strengthening inclusive education across Fort McMurray schools.
