Winter Maintenance Zones, RMWB image
FORT McMURRAY — Winter maintenance restrictions on residential streets across Fort McMurray will be relaxed over the holiday period, with all subzones paused from Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, municipal officials say.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says Subzones 3 and 4 are expected to resume snow removal operations from Jan. 5 to Jan. 9, weather permitting.
While the Winter Maintenance Zone program will be on hold, snow removal will continue on primary, secondary and tertiary roads throughout the holidays. Crews will prioritize school zones while traffic volumes are lower during the holiday break.
Residents are being reminded to watch for temporary no parking signs, which will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of scheduled snow removal. Once restrictions take effect, vehicles must be removed until signs are taken down.
The municipality is also reminding homeowners that clearing snow from sidewalks and driveways adjacent to their property remains their responsibility and must be completed within 48 hours after a snowfall. Snow should be piled on lawns or green spaces and not pushed onto streets or cul-de-sacs.
Officials are urging residents to stay clear of snow removal equipment and give crews space when operations resume in January. Updates on winter maintenance activity are available through neighbourhood signage, online alerts and the municipal website.
