FORT McMURRAY — The La Loche Winter Trail is opening to light vehicles at noon today, with officials urging drivers to plan ahead and use caution.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says vehicles weighing less than 5,000 kilograms will be permitted to use the winter trail starting Monday. Load limits will be increased as conditions allow, with all changes to be formally announced.
Officials warn vehicles heavier than the posted load limit could face significant fines and penalties if they use the winter road. All heavy vehicles, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit before travelling on the route.
Drivers are being reminded to slow down, stay on the right-hand side of the road, and stop at river crossings, where only one vehicle is allowed to cross at a time. Crews and equipment may be working along the route, and posted signage may not be in place for every hazard.
The municipality says speeding on winter roads is especially dangerous, particularly at river ice crossings.
The latest winter road updates are available through the municipality’s website, recorded hotline, social media channels and email subscription service.
