(Fort McMurray, Alberta) — Update: As of 3:51pm investigators have cleared the scene and the highway has since been reopened.
One person is dead and several others were injured following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 63 near Airport Road Tuesday night. Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers were called to the scene around 8:45 p.m. on January 7, along with emergency medical services.
A 27-year-old man from Fort McMurray, who was driving one of the vehicles involved, was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP say all other individuals involved in the crash sustained varying degrees of injuries and are expected to survive.
As a result of the investigation, Highway 63 northbound remains closed at Airport Road and is unlikely to reopen before late in the day on January 8. Traffic is being diverted through the area, and motorists should expect slow-moving traffic and delays.
Drivers traveling near the scene are asked to proceed with caution and follow the directions of traffic control personnel while the investigation continues.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
