EDMONTON — Alberta’s measles outbreak has dropped to a single known communicable case as public health officials continue contact tracing to reach anyone who may have been exposed while the individual was contagious.
Alberta Health officials say the remaining active case is in the North Zone. Contact tracers are working to notify close contacts and provide guidance on monitoring symptoms and vaccination where needed. No measles patients are currently hospitalized, and there are no cases in intensive care.
The latest data show 2,049 confirmed measles cases in Alberta since March 2025, with 2,048 now considered no longer communicable. Officials caution the numbers reflect confirmed cases only and do not rule out undiagnosed infections in the community.
Health authorities say the outbreak has been record-breaking for Alberta, triggered by a case brought into the province by a traveller and followed by rapid spread in communities with low vaccination coverage. Most reported cases have been among children and youth who were not immunized.
Cases have been recorded in every health zone, with the highest totals in the South Zone, followed by the North and Central zones. Children and teenagers account for the majority of infections, including 593 cases in children under five and 908 cases in those aged five to 17.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that usually begins on the face before spreading across the body. Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, brain inflammation and, in rare cases, death.
Public health officials continue to urge Albertans to ensure their measles vaccinations are up to date, calling immunization the most effective way to prevent infection and limit further spread.
Exposure information and immunization guidance are available through Alberta Health Services and the Alberta government’s measles information pages.
