FORT McMURRAY — The load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will increase to 45,000 kilograms effective Thursday at noon.
Officials say the new limit is the maximum allowed for the season and no further increases will be made. Vehicles exceeding posted weight limits face significant fines and penalties.
Drivers are being urged to plan ahead, drive to conditions and follow all posted signage while using the winter road, where hazards may not be marked along the entire route. Motorists are also asked to remain alert for crews and equipment working on the roadway.
All heavy vehicles, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to travel the winter road. Drivers are reminded to keep to the right, particularly on hills, and to stop at river crossings, where only one vehicle is permitted to cross at a time.
Officials also warn that speeding is especially dangerous on the delta section of the route, where fast-moving vehicles can create waves beneath the ice that may damage the road or cause sudden ice failure.
Road users are encouraged to monitor conditions through municipal updates, the winter road hotline, or the municipality’s website and social media channels.
