FORT McMURRAY — Keyano College is expanding its middle school esports and STEM programming this winter with multiple camps designed to introduce youth to science, technology and teamwork through structured gaming and hands-on activities.
The Esports and STEM camps will be held at the SMG Esports Arena at Keyano College and are open to students aged 10 to 14 of all skill levels. Morning sessions are scheduled for Feb. 23 and Feb. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, while afternoon sessions will run Feb. 24, Feb. 25 and Feb. 27 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The program uses popular games such as Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League and Roblox to teach problem solving, collaboration and strategic thinking. Participants take part in team-based activities, interactive STEM challenges and friendly esports competitions, while also learning video capture skills and core esports fundamentals.
Camps are led by experienced collegiate esports athletes who provide coaching and mentorship throughout each session. Organizers say structured off-screen breaks with physical activities are built into the schedule, and campers are grouped by age and experience to create a positive and inclusive environment.
All gaming equipment is provided, including professional gaming computers, headsets, keyboards, mice and console controllers. Students may bring their own equipment if they choose, though the college is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Food is not provided due to allergy and dietary considerations. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle and any snacks they may need. Parents or guardians may drop students off up to 15 minutes before each session and are required to sign them out within 15 minutes of pickup time, unless alternate arrangements have been made.
Keyano College notes the camps operate as educational programs and are not licensed childcare or daycare services under Alberta legislation. All participants are expected to follow college policies while on campus.
Registration is open until Feb. 21. More information is available through Keyano College, and questions can be directed to camp instructor and supervisor Ebenezer Olowo.
