EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP and law enforcement partners across the province will take part in Operation Cold Start next week, a winter initiative aimed at reducing thefts of unattended, idling vehicles.
The campaign runs from Feb. 1 to Feb. 7, with officers checking parked vehicles to see whether keys have been left inside and whether vehicles are properly secured. Police will also speak with drivers about steps they can take to prevent theft during colder months.
Police say vehicle theft affects more than just owners, noting that insurance costs can rise and stolen vehicles are often used to commit additional crimes or sold to unsuspecting buyers.
RCMP are reminding drivers to park in visible, well-lit areas when possible, use visible anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks, and understand their vehicle’s security features, particularly with push-button start systems. Officers also urge motorists never to leave vehicles unattended with keys inside and to always lock doors, even when parked at home.
Police note that most modern vehicles do not require a warm-up period and warn that leaving a vehicle running and unattended also puts personal property at risk.
“Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm can be convenient for thieves looking to steal transportation to commit additional crimes,” said Staff Sgt. Luke Halvorson of the Alberta RCMP Community Safety and Well-being Unit. “Operation Cold Start aims to reduce auto theft by educating Albertans on steps they can take to help keep their vehicle safe.”
